Don’t let your phone map fool you, Miguel’s is a Hondo landmark although phone directions may lead you to the bridge on the west side of the restaurant. Miguel runs his business himself. Can expect a warm handshake upon entrance. He explained to me that he has been involved in numerous corporate restaurants opening in the past. He has been an international chef and takes great pride in serving some inexpensive and abundant dishes to his numerous repeat customers. Driving by you might not bother to stop as the old building someone blends in with the scenery, and has a small parking area just in front. It’s very nondescript, but it’s definitely worth dropping in. A huge stone fireplace sits central to the small main room. There is a small room in the back and it’s very quiet. Family photos are hung in appreciation randomly in the restaurant.

Miguel offers a large variety of breakfast specialties for the hungry man, including a Special Pork Chop Breakfast and a Top Sirloin Breakfast. Lunch is served from 11am to 2pm and selections include Steak Ranchero, or T-bones for only $8.99. Not that hungry? Try one of the hamburgers or club sandwiches, and choose from a variety of sides. Read our delectable review on Heavy’s Barbecue Below

I am not sure where the name came from but they are heavy on the servings. The menu is pretty basic, but the smell of barbecue lingers down the block and is enough to draw in a crowd. Some say it’s the best BBQ in Hondo. Choices are either a sandwich or a plate with beef, sausage, turkey, chicken, or pork ribs that are barbecued fresh daily by the entrance. Prices for sandwiches start at $4.75, and plates go up to $11.50. You may also buy meat by the pound. There’s 2 specials on the menu, Frito pie, or the Heavy D which consists of chunks of beef and sliced sausage, toped with beans and sauce. Family Packs are available to serve either three or six people, at $19.50, and $37.50 respectively. They include your meat, beans, potato salad, pickles and onions, and bread.

The restaurant looks somewhat like a cabin in the woods, with numerous taxidermy mounts on the wall, and picnic tables that match the hardwood floors, which match the wood walls. There is a small covered porch if you prefer to eat outside near the barbecue. Everything smells wonderful so it’s hard to choose. If you’re a big meat eater this is the place to be! Ask what their special homemade dessert is for the day. Order at the counter and buy some by the pound to take home. You’ll be glad you did! Located at 1301 19th St. centrally on Highway 90 W.

Golden Dragon Chinese Restaurant

While the menu may be a little bit quirky, the service and hot delectable food makes up for it. You can get the main idea from the menu, although the Kings English is perhaps a little distorted, it is clear that the restaurant caters to your needs. So “if do not like vegetable or dislike vegetable inform worker and we can cook it with vegetable or without”. Also they show
their appreciation for the customers by stating “thank you for calling,” and the service truly shows they mean it.

Besides a daily buffet, there is a daily lunch special for $4.79, house specials, low-fat specials, and even special family dinners. They have an interesting dinner for two, three, four, five, or six at a great price. Feed six people for $49.99 with beef broccoli, chicken goo gai pan, pork lo mein, lemon chicken, shrimp, vegetables, and sesame chicken.

Golden Dragon has a separate room in the back for parties, and if you want to book the place for your party, they will also open on Sundays and serve whatever you would like, (with or without vegetables), prepared special just for you! Come hungry! Regular hours are 11 AM to 9 PM Monday through Saturday. Easy to find, at 1219 19th St. (Hwy 90) 830-426-4211

El Charro is a long time favorite of Hondo. They have bases covered with a drive-through separate room for parties, a beautiful bar, and bakery. With the features of a fine restaurant you would not expect the drive-through, but it quick place to awesome meal during your lunch hour. The menu is extensive and contains combinations of Tex-Mex, salads, steaks, seafood, chicken, and chef’s specials.

There also for child’s plates to choose from for $4.90. Menu prices range from $1.65 for tacos on the breakfast menu to $6.50 for a Porkchop plate with two eggs, beans, and diced potatoes. Lunch an supper starts around $6.95 and goes up to $10.95. Don’t forget to try one of the many fancy bar drinks! Drink from a hollowed out pineapple, or choose another vessel that takes your tension away with a little umbrella.

This is a great place to hold a party, and the private seating area will hold up to 40 guests. The selection is so large that the font on the takeout menu had to be reduced making it a bit hard to read, so rather than take out, enjoy the ambience of El Charro at 2507 19th St. (Hwy 90) between 6am-10pm (Closed at 3 pm on Sunday’s).
